Agenda 2063 is built around seven core aspirations that reflect the collective ambition of Africans for the development of Africa.
The launch of the Second 10-Year Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063, also dubbed as the decade of acceleration (2024-2033), is a historic milestone for the African Union, its Member States, and all African citizens. It marks the beginning of the second decade of a collective effort to realise the vision of a prosperous, peaceful, and integrated Africa by 2063. The Second 10-Year Implementation Plan of Agenda 2063 is a bold and ambitious roadmap for Africa's transformation. It is a manifestation of the collective will and determination of the African people to shape their destinity. It is a reaffirmation of the African dream of unity, dignity, and prosperity for all.
The plan outlines seven moonshots of how the continent aims to achieve key priorities, goals and targets to achieve in the next 10 years. By 2033, Africa wants to be prosperous, integrated, democratic, peaceful, cultured, people-driven and influential.
Moonshot 1: Every AU Member State attains at least middle-income status
The focus will be on creating wealth, with an overall target of GDP per capita USD 3,048 achieved by each AU Member State. Some of the key interventions will include industrialization and value addition, boosting agriculture productivity and production, and strengthening governance at all levels.
Moonshot 2: Africa is more integrated and connected
The focus here will be on infrastructure development and energy security, trade in goods and services, and on connectivity -including Internet access, IT, AI, roads and air transport, among others.
Moonshot 3: Public institutions are more responsive
The Continent - over the next decade will, among others, place a premium on Respect for the rule of law, nurturing transformative leadership, and building / strengthening responsive democracy.
Moonshot 4: Africa resolves conflicts amicably
This will entail strengthening surveillance and early warning mechanisms at all levels, strengthening social cohesion and respect for diversity, enhancing mechanisms for peaceful conflict resolution.
Moonshot 5: African values are explicit and promoted
The Continent will need to articulate Africa's values and subsequently buttress all development on African values.
Moonshot 6: Africa's citizens are more empowered and more productive
The Continent will make deliberate efforts to transform education and health systems, enhance social protection measures, and equip her citizens with the requisite skills and resources to be able to drive Africa’s development.
Moonshot 7: Africa is a strong and influential global player
The Continent will be intentional about Africa's representation at strategic global platforms, build African Common Positions on pertinent global matters, and play an active role in the governance of international institutions.
The plan also identifies flagship projects that will have a high impact, such as the African Continental Free Trade Area, the African Passport, the Grand Inga Dam, the Single African Air Transport Market, the African Virtual University, the Pan-African E-Network, and the African Outer Space Strategy. These projects will enhance regional integration, economic diversification, innovation, and competitiveness, as well as social inclusion and cohesion.
The launch of the plan is a call to action for all stakeholders to join hands and work together to make Agenda 2063 a reality. The success of the plan depends on the ownership, commitment, and participation of all Africans, including governments, regional economic communities, civil society organizations, the private sector, academia, media, and the diaspora.
The plan also requires effective coordination, monitoring, and evaluation mechanisms to ensure accountability and transparency. The African Union Commission together with AUDA-NEPAD will play a leading role in facilitating and supporting the implementation of the plan at all levels.
