Media Advisory: Private Sector Investment in Health Dialogue
What: Private Sector Investment in Health Dialogue
When: 5 – 7 October 2022
Where: Hilton Nairobi Hotel, Nairobi Kenya
Theme: “Strategies and Innovations for Public-Private Sector Engagement”
30 September 2022, Nairobi, Kenya - The African Union Commission (AUC) and African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD) in partnership with World Health Organization(WHO); The World Bank, Resilient Health Systems and Global Fund are hosting a Private Sector Investment in Health Dialogue between 5 - 7 October 2022 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The Dialogue will hold consultations with RECs, Member States, the private sector and partners on the opportunities and strategies for increasing private sector investment in health and provision of quality and equitable services. The Dialogue will also serve as a south-south learning platform between Africa and other regions, sharing good practices and strategies for collaboration to increase private sector engagement in health in Africa. The African Union has long recognized the need to work with the private sector to strengthen and transform health systems in Africa and contribute to Agenda 2063 and universal health coverage.
The Dialogue will draw from the February 2019 African Leadership Meeting (ALM) and is founded on the Africa Health Strategy 2016-2030, the 2001 Abuja political commitments and the 2013 Abuja +12 Declaration. The African Union Development Agency (AUDA – NEPAD) is leading this engagement in developing a Private Sector Engagement Framework and Monitoring and Evaluation plan as per the decision of the 35th Ordinary Session of the Union in February 2022.
The importance of the private sector cannot be underestimated, particularly in healthcare delivery in developing countries. However, in most African countries, the consideration of private sector engagement in health is inadequate, limiting both the supply of healthcare goods and services and the potential sources of health financing.
The aim of the dialogue is to share experiences and good practices in private sector engagement in health within Africa and other regions; identify opportunities and strategies for strengthening private sector engagement in health; identify opportunities for South-South collaboration to increase private sector investment in health in Africa; and map key stakeholders that will drive and support the implementation of the African Union PSE Framework at the continental, regional and national levels.
