The School Meals Coalition is a 2030 initiative of governments and a wide range of partners to help transform food and education systems, support pandemic recovery and drive actions to achieve the SDGs. It seeks to ensure that every child has a more nutritious, healthy school meal by 2030.
We hope you will join leading Ministers and partners to learn how you can help build and contribute to this new collaboration before its official launch in fall 2021 at the UN Food Systems Summit.
Why School Meals and Why Now?
School children, and their education, are among the most widely affected victims of the pandemic. The scale of the impact has been enormous.
Nearly every family in the world, whether they experienced health consequences of COVID-19 or not, is, or was, touched by the long term impacts of school closures.
Opening schools safely, re-establishing and improving national, sustainable school meals programmes and other nutrition and health interventions has become an urgent priority.
When school meals programmes are integrated with health and nutrition programmes, they can transform lives and communities. They can do more than provide food. They can support local farmers and markets who sell food to schools, create jobs locally; improve health and combat all forms of malnutrition; get children into school, especially girls, and help them learn. They can make communities more resilient.
One of the most important contributions to recovery governments and their partners can make, is scaling up and improving a next generation of school meals programs.
