Overview

The Gambian Women’s Bureau established the project to improve the economic outcomes of 100,000 rural Gambian women through education/training, creating employment opportunities, as well as investments in equipment and infrastructure to alleviate the physical burden many women face. 31 female run vegetable gardens were funded and constructed over the course of the project. The women involved in these gardens were provided training on the efficient management and processing of the gardens. Furthermore, an agro-processing plant was constructed which created employment and economic empowerment opportunities for the women involved. The project was aligned with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 aspirations, particularly that which creates a prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development.

Key results

• 100,000 rural Gambian women were reached through education/training, creating employment opportunities, as well as investments in equipment and infrastructure to alleviate the physical burden many women face.
• 31 female run vegetable gardens were funded and constructed, increasing the agricultural output of these communities and thus creating a reliable source of food and income for the beneficiaries and their dependents.
• An agro-processing plant was constructed which created employment and economic empowerment opportunities for the women involved while simultaneously improving the productivity of the female farmers in the surrounds of the plant, thus supporting their economic emancipation.
