Media Advisory Hon. Raila Odinga, High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa
Bridging the gap in infrastructure is vital to economic advancement and sustainable development. However, this can only be achieved through regional and continental co-operation and solution-finding, which calls for greater political will and buy-in.
The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, appointed Honourable Raila Odinga of Kenya as High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa on 20 October 2018. As High Representative for Infrastructure, Hon. Odinga will work to support and strengthen the efforts of the Commission’s relevant Departments and those of the NEPAD Agency, within the framework of the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa.

10th Africa PPP Conference and Showcase
Inaugurated in 2009, the African Public Private Partnerships Conference, will be celebrating its 10th edition on 24 – 25 October 2018.
Since its inception in 2009, Africa PPP has become a key platform for industry stakeholders to meet, discuss, debate and share PPP plans. Ten years later, it remains the most successful event for PPP instigation and implementation in Africa, promoting cooperation between public and private sector to reduce the infrastructure gap.
Importance of PPPs to Africa
To achieve greater economic growth and increased competitivity, it’s imperative that the development of physical infrastructure continue to be one of the key priorities for the African region. Hampered growth is only one of the consequences from not investing in physical infrastructure, developing water and sanitation infrastructure is crucial to the increase of quality of life for the populations. It is estimated that Africa will need over USD $100bn a year to close the infrastructure gaps that exist.
Governments and Public are looking into the PPP model as a mechanism to ensure the development of the required infrastructure, while not compromising on technology and expertise, all the while providing long term sustainable investment opportunities. And while African countries have different challenges from country to country, APPP serves as a Forum where experiences can be shared on how to navigate these complex policy instruments.
The 2018 edition will be held under the theme:
Developing Africa’s Infrastructure by enabling
investment in energy, transport and water partnerships!

And the second event is on the Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA) and the African Union (AU) Continental Business Network (CBN) that markets bankable infrastructure projects in Africa for increased private sector involvement/investment. The event will take place on 25th September 2018; Time: TBC; Venue: NASDAQ Exchange, Time Square in New York, USA.
The third event is the 2nd Annual MoveAfrica Humanitarian Logistics Dialogue focusing on unlocking logistical bottlenecks on Africa’s borders and corridors for free movement of goods and services meant for humanitarian assistance, as well as transport and trade facilitation. The AU-CBN financial guarantees scheme will take place on 28th September 2018; Time: 09:15 – 11:30am; Venue: TBC in New York, USA.
WHO: The side events will be attended by high-level individuals that include; President of Rwanda and AU Chairperson, H.E. Paul Kagame; President of Zambia, H.E. Edgar C. Lungu; President of South Africa, H.E. Cyril Ramaphosa, Prime Minister of the kingdom of Lesotho, H.E. Thomas M. Thabane; African Union Commissioner for social affairs, H.E. Mrs Amira El Fadil; NEPAD Agency CEO, H.E. Dr Ibrahim A. Mayaki; Global Fund (GF) Executive Director, Peter Sands; Goodwill Ambassador and popular global musical icon Yvonne Chaka-Chaka; and many other leaders.
WHY: In March 2018, 44 African Heads of State and Government signed the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCTA) Agreement to boost regional integration, business ties and free movement of goods and people on the continent. Currently, intra-Africa trade stands at around 10%. AfCTA will contribute to lifting barriers that have hampered trade to boost economic growth, and eventually end poverty and hunger in Africa within the framework of the AU Agenda 2063.
Beyond trade, AfCTA will also make a huge contribution towards addressing the challenges of cross border disease surveillance through increased collaboration and partnerships across African countries. This will contribute to ending a common disease burden on the continent, as well as build resilience and strengthen public health emergency preparedness and risk assessment, especially against disease outbreaks i.e. Ebola.
The Africa We Want! – NEPAD Agency tripartite side events at this year’s UNGA focus on the above core issues to accelerate Africa’s socio-economic development.
